Kenya Rhino Charge Car 39

By Nick Elphick

Hi, I was in Nairobi Kenya recently and was introduced to a rather interesting LR 110 Pick-up which has been built up by its owner Ben Woodhams to compete in the annual fund raising event the "Rhino Charge"

I asked Ben to give us some brief detail about his car and the Rhino Charge. Ben also produced a CD covering Car 39 in the 2006 event. I can bring it along to our next meeting if anyone wants to see it.

Body: 110 pick-up, shortened rear, stretched cab (longer doors)

Engine: Range Rover 3.9 V8 on SU carbs (don’t flood at extreme angles, don’t go wrong like efi)

Gearbox: Santana 5 speed with Borg Warner Transfer Box – LSD diff

Axles: Unimog 404 portals with cable difflocks and 4:1 reduction drop boxes

Tyres: Unimog 12.50 x 20 Continentals with Bandag military retread

Suspension: LR heavy duty shocks inside standard HD LR springs both front and rear (ie rear shocks OVER axle mounted to front turrets)

Winches: Front: Warn 8274, Rear: Superwinch 8,000 lbs

Others: Home-made internal roll cage (tested twice!) Landcruiser running boards, inboard baffled Bedford Lorry fuel tank

Charity: Rhino Ark: fencing the Aberdares rain forest to prevent poaching, illegal logging and elephants destroying farmers’ crops, see http://www.justgiving.com/rhinocharge2008car39

As the event is for a worthy and quite unique cause I am sure Ben would welcome any donations for the 2008 event. Please refer to www.justgiving.com/rhinocharge2008car39 for more details.

You can see the pics in the photo Album.
